Thanksgiving is THE big day in the dining room. It’s also the time of year those of us without a deliciously colorful dining room might get to wishing we had one. Whenever I spend too much time looking at gigantic formal dining rooms painted in spectacular colors, I’m soon caught lurking around the doorways of other rooms in the house and musing; “Maybe this could be a dining room?” Then again, maybe it’s not about the area, or about having a designated dining room at all; as is often the case, maybe it’s all about the color?
If this dining area doesn’t make you want to run off and paint something Squish-Squash 311, I’ll eat those Thanksgiving yams with the marshmallows on top, and my hat.
It’s probably too late for any of us to seriously get busy with Squish-Squash, or any other fabulous dining room color we wish we had. So in the meantime I found some colorful pieces at Etsy which will add more color to the table, and the house while we contemplate the next dining area color move.
Here’s a good solution for the dining room deprived! I can’t quite figure out where this yummy holiday dinner will take place — California? — but it’s for sure outdoors — wow. The leaves are throwing me off, and my own northeastern location makes dining alfresco for Thanksgiving an idea I can only envy. Still, the great outdoors makes a formidable backdrop for color, which is not lost in this dazzling aqua, yellow, brown, and saffron tablescape. Thanksgiving on the patio — would you, could you?
Here’s a spot like my own, possibly one end of a living room, where dining is designated by the obvious — a table and chairs. Brown is not typically a color we associate with a dining room, and yet comfy cozy browns will reliably recreate the warmth of a traditional dining room setting. Why not brown chairs and window trim in a dining area, and then go color crazy on the table, using all colors “autumn”? All browns appear more complex when in the company of acid green or chartreuse. Leafy greens companion well with the soft glow of candles too, making this color a must have on the holiday table, no matter where in your home it happens to be.
This Thanksgiving I plan to do my table in all white to compliment my pink and gray dining area : ( . I found these sweet quail candles, which I’ll set out amongst a collection of white chicken cranberry sauce servers and the all white old Fenton serving pieces. Hot pink flowers, chartreuse greens, and napkins the color of Squish-Squash, should keep my color ambitions at bay just long enough for me to get the Turkey to the table.
Wherever you happen to be dining this Thanksgiving, it’s easy to find creative ways to sprinkle in your favorite colors. Once the last platter is put away, and the house is quiet again, we can get chatting about which colors will make a dining room, or dining area, a special place to enjoy the holidays. We can share photos of our Thanksgiving tables. What do you have planned for a colorful Thanksgiving in your home? For me, maybe it’s some of that squish squash!
A happy, healthy, and delicious Thanksgiving to your and yours, from all of us here at Color Chats.
