Which Color of the Year Do You Prefer?

Pantone’s Tangerine Tango vs Benjamin Moore’s Wythe Blue

It’s no secret that both Pantone and Benjamin Moore have announced their selections for Color of the Year.  Pantone named Tangerine Tango a spirited reddish orange that will surely provide a jolt of inspirational energy.  Benjamin Moore, on the other hand, has selected wythe blue HC-143, a soothing blue-green hue symbolizing tranquility.colors of the year by benjamin moore and pantonePantone’s lively, juicy color is certainly a provocative attention-getter, and is especially appealing as an accent adding that unexpected pop of color.

  1. Maybe it’s just my personality, but I prefer a room to be calming. Although, a bright smack of color never hurt anyone. Certainly a unique idea to combine the two! I may have to give it a try. …now to decide which room!

    • Indeed Ben, no one has ever been hurt by a smack of color! Thanks for reading and taking the time to leave a response.

  2. I like both colors, but it completely depends on how they’re used. I love the tangerine for an accent wall, maybe paired with white accents. But the blue is calming and chic… could be great for a spa-like bathroom or even for a classically decorated dining room like in the photo above.

  3. I think the Tango color is cheap, overwhelming and hurts my eyes, and even when it’s used just as an accent color, you sure to get tired of it very quickly…the combination makes it even worse, it seems to give the room an impression of being very kindergardenish or a girls-tea-party

wythe blue, on the other hand, is sophisticated, chic and versatille…

  4. What color is the trim in the Pantone’s Tango sitting room ? I really like the combination there. I plan on using Wythe Blue in our Great Room , with pops of Tango here and there.

    • Hi Gerri, The color on the trim and bookshelf in that image is Guilford Green HC-116. The “cream” in this room actually has a hint of green in it which gives the color a little bit of an edge. Happy Painting!

  5. I am painting my very traditional dining room Wythe Blue- I think it has enough grey in it to work well in a formal space. Crossing my fingers it looks great! My living room coming off of the dining room is going to be Monroe Bisque, a creamy neutral which does have a yellow/orange undertone. Don’t know if I’m brave enough to add any Tangerine tango in the mix!

    • Hey Rebecca, your project sounds like so much fun. When you’re done, please share a picture to the Benjamin Moore Facebook page. I can’t wait to see the results!

  6. Sign me up, I love them together! My preferrences have always leaned towards the warm happy colors, but I think they are quite delicious co-mingling!

    • Hi Beth, I couldn’t have said it better myself! Paint Colors is fascinating which is why we love to blog about them. Thanks for the comment!

  7. Our interior design work on houses in the Hamptons typically falls more into the realm of Wythe Blue (we’ve used it several times in projects for our clients)…However, orange is such a fun color, and a great compliment to blue.

At the 2010 Hampton Designer Showhouse, we didn’t have to choose between orange and blue…The retro chic Mad Men-era Pool Lounge we created featured orange furniture, wallpaper, rug and pillows, punctuated with splashes of aqua blue accessories:

So, why pick one over the other, when you can have both? We’ll take Wythe Blue AND Tangerine Tango!

    • I love your retro chic Mad Men-era Pool Lounge! Amazing use of both blue and orange. Thanks for reading the post and leaving a comment!

  17. Do you think you could paint an entire master bedroom in the Wyeth blue? Our master bath is adjoining the bedroom and the walls are visible. Would you continue the wyeth blue in the bathroom or do another color?

    • Hi Leslie, Absolutely! Wythe Blue is a great universal color (not to mention that it’s the 2012 Color of the Year at Benjamin Moore) and will complement any space. Try pairing it with any of the following colors: Handmade AF-325, Spa AF-435, Simply Irresistible #205, French White #1093, or Hollingsworth Green HC-141. Good luck with this project! Share some pics when you’re done- I’d love to see. – Michelle
