Into It or Over It? Chevron

No matter what you choose to call it, this playful pattern certainly isn’t “new”, but it has jumped back onto the design scene in a BIG and bold way this past year.  I’ve been spotting it in abundance on everything from pillows to purses…fashion to flooring…curtains, and even wedding cakes!

My friend and colour confidant, Dawn Stoecklin, recently wrote a post titled “Energizing Spaces with Geometric Patterns” which included some fun examples of chevron, and surprisingly it started a bit of a buzz around the water cooler.

There two things that I have recently come to discover about this zippity little pattern…people either love it, or they’re over it!

I must admit, I likely wouldn’t wear zig zags, but I do love it used as an instant punch of graphic colour and pattern in the home.

If you’re undecided and thinking that you “might” love a little chevron, I always say…when in doubt, try a toss cushion! yellow chevron pillowImage found here

It’s always a super easy and affordable way to test drive a trend in your home without long term commitment.

But my other favorite saying is “Go BIG, or go HOME”….and lately I’m lovin’ all of these painted chevron patterns on a super-sized scale!

Could it be that chevron has joined the ranks of patterned “classics” with the likes of hounds tooth, plaid, and even stripes?  I have a sneaking suspicion that chevron will be sticking around for a while, but what I really want to know is…

Are you into it, or over it?

Happy Painting and Decorating!!

  1. I was into it, but now, that you see it everywhere, pillows, walls, rugs, etc, I am kind of over it..I do think it is a trend that is going away in a couple of years..

    • I have to agree…when I start seeing a trend EVERYWHERE, I loose interest quickly. Although I haven’t completely become bored with chevron…yet :-) Thanks for your feedback!

  2. I have never been wild about this pattern, gives me vertigo; but, when my daughter bought a pair of Chevron patterned jeans, I thought “this is going to be bad.” I was so wrong, she looked great in them and they were slimming (she is young with great legs anyway). I like the white on white desk top, but more than that, no can do.

    • Well, if you “do” chevron, please be sure to tweeet me a pic… @LeighAnnAllaire Thanks so much for leaving a comment!

  3. I was never really a big fan of it. It’s not that it’s bad, but it’s a trend and people go overboard, and then what happens in a few years? You have all of this stuff with a dated pattern.

    • Hahahaha…so true! That’s why I loved the idea of painting chevron on a wall…when you’re “over it” you can paint “over it” ;-)

    • I definitely think chevron is a solid classic…but who knows how it will reinvent itself to stay trendy in the future! Thanks so much for leaving a comment :-)

  4. There are so many different patterns you can create with a traditional chevron shape. It does not have to be the traditional unending chevron as seen here.

Go for different colors or reverse the pattern. laNeva Artisan Tile is incorporating diagonal color glazing on their ceramic tile to create some super dynamic chevron patterns that are unlike any of these shown. One design was just posted yesterday http://blog.lanevatile.com/2012/08/02/laneva%E2%80%99s-newest-modico-molded-tile/ with more to come.

  5. I still love chevron! I also like when it has a little “ethnic” or hand-drawn feel to it, not so perfectly geometrical. I think this pattern will stay in style for a while…

    • Ooooh….I completely agree with you about chevron having an ethnic twist! I absolutely adore West Elm’s South Africa collection for exactly that reason! Thanks so much for you comment :-)
